How does Bernajean’s book extend the online tools?

Bernajean’s book, Evaluating Digital Products, was developed as materials to provide training and resources that would increase skills in using these tools in classrooms as well as for organizing whole school assessment. The book contains help in designing effective lessons, a lesson plan scoring guide, twenty-eight types of communication scoring guides, descriptors of all traits, and multiple training strategies, practice and implementation ideas and tools to guide administrators and teachers in using these tools to increase their assessment strategies. Teachers, trainers and administrators will find the book invaluable to using the online tools effectively!

How Were the Scoring Guides Developed?

Bernajean Porter Consulting in partnership with NCRTEC/NCREL developed, prototyped, field-tested and evaluated these tools using a team of national consultants to identify the framework. These tools provide groundbreaking resources to assess student performance in both content communication and the "craftsmanship" of using the technology to communicate information and concepts.

The tools and processes developed were based on the research and successes of California (Bay Area) Writing Project; Six Trait Scoring Tools; Six Trait Training Processes; Bloom’s Taxonomy, and Harvard Project Zero’s Collaborative Assessment. The final scoring guides are validated for grades 4-12. While grades K-3 teachers are certainly able to select descriptors from the scoring guides they feel developmentally appropriate to the tasks given, the national literature review could not validate the descriptors to be used holistically for the young emergent learners at this time. After two years of field-testing and NCRTEC’s quality review, the Student Scoring Guides developed are now available ONLINE for teachers and students personal use. Bernajean’s book provides extended resources for using these tools.
